SEO after AI answers

Search increasingly returns an answer rather than a list. The work shifts from ranking a page to being the source that gets quoted.

Read this in Bahasa Malaysia

For twenty years the goal was a position on a page of links. Increasingly the result is a synthesised answer, with a handful of citations underneath it. That does not make search engine optimisation obsolete, but it changes what winning looks like.

Being crawlable is still the entry fee

Answer engines draw on the same crawled corpus. If a page is slow, blocked, or renders only after JavaScript, it is invisible to both audiences. Nothing about AI changes the fundamentals.

What changes is the unit

A ranking system evaluates a page. An answer engine lifts a fragment. That fragment has to survive being quoted with none of your page around it.

  • Answer first, elaborate second — a point reached in sentence four gets truncated before it arrives

  • Name the subject, because "we work across Malaysia" quoted alone names nobody

  • One claim per paragraph, so two ideas cannot be merged into a third you never made

  • Question-shaped headings, because that is the shape being matched

Accuracy compounds differently now

A wrong figure in a search result is a wrong search result. A wrong figure repeated by an assistant becomes something the user believes, with no page in front of them to check it against. Publish what you can substantiate and omit what you cannot.

Structure helps, within reason

Clean markup and structured data make extraction more reliable. They do not make a vague page quotable — that is a writing problem, and no amount of markup fixes it.
